Hipsters

In my opinion, hipsters have diminished the power of public movements. In the past, people would openly come together for a cause and unite against it. There was no issue with sharing an opinion with other people. In fact, there was a sense of pride in knowing that a whole group of strangers felt similarly to your emotions. The concept of a 'collective consciousness' was valued and often left people in awe.

Wow, here we are, two completely different people who have never met before and look, we have something in common.

A united front was something to honour. It was a sense of belonging in a long and lonely life. It was a way to meet new people and celebrate common interests. But now in the new day and age, it seems that "being different" has a higher value. The entire concept of "bandwagoners" has such a strong negative connotation that it has taken a toll on our society. We no longer feel any pride in our shared common interests.

Technology, specifically social media, was created to connect people. It was created as channels for people to share their interests. But it looks like we've lost sight of that. Maybe the time has finally come when the machines have won. We are now more disconnected than we have ever been. Social media platforms have transformed from an idea that valued 'relatedness' to a competitive stage where each individual attempts to outperform the other. People have begun to ridicule others who have common interests with the general public.

What? You just read that book now!? Wow I read that 2 years ago.
You just discovered that website now? That's so played out.

Personally, this hits a sore spot. The whole point of social media is to grow as a community. as a whole. as a global front. How is that to happen if almost every individual is striving to be different than the next?

People! We are already different! We are all unique! That's what makes us humans!
We really don't need to try so hard.

I think it's time our generation rediscovers the magic and power in uniting as one strong front. There is nothing wrong, and in fact it's credible, to see us all working together to fight for a cause. Individuality is great, but sometimes, a team effort is greater.

So let's relate.
connect.
and unite.
TOGETHER.
