Touchy Subjects Part 1

She stopped typing and looked right at him. "It's not as complicated as you think it is", she said, straightening her back and casually ruffling her hair.
"What isn't?" he asked. He was sprawled on the couch across from her. He suddenly became consciously aware of her presence. Her hair draped over her bare shoulders. The way she kept adjusting and readjusting it till it was perfect.
"This. Us", she said with utmost confidence, as if it was the most self-explanatory statement.
He knew what was coming. He knew her too well.
"You know what I'm saying, right?" she uncrossed her legs and leaned forward, "I don't want to fuck it up this time."
He did know. That's what he loved about their friendship, he always knew."And what is this? Us?", he maintained eye contact. He was just teasing her, testing her.
She stared at him for a second or two before she looked away. She was uncomfortable. This made him smile.
She turned back to her Macbook, her blank expression immediately washed by the dull glow of the screen.
That's it. Conversation over. She was checked out.
He chuckled at the irony of the situation.
